Aquaculture certification schemes are increasingly incorporating welfare criteria, but wide variation in standards and enforcement leaves many farmed fish in poor welfare conditions.
Aquaculture welfare certification is at an earlier stage than terrestrial livestock certification. Most schemes focus on antibiotic use, environmental impact, and food safety rather than behavioral welfare, stocking density, and slaughter method. As aquaculture scales to feed growing global demand, embedding welfare standards in certification systems is urgently needed.
