Hamsters in inadequate housing suffer profoundly but silently. Stereotypic bar-chewing and repetitive running indicate severe behavioral frustration that occurs in environments too small to permit natural burrowing, foraging, and high-speed locomotion. Pet store enclosures promoted as appropriate are often dramatically undersized relative to welfare science standards. Minimum space guidelines need to become legal standards.
