Wild animal welfare presents philosophical and practical challenges — most wild animals live short, painful lives dominated by predation, disease, and starvation at enormous population scale.
Wild animal suffering is an immense and largely unaddressed welfare challenge. The majority of wild animals — particularly small mammals, fish, and invertebrates — experience lives characterized by chronic suffering from parasitism, predation, starvation, and disease. This does not argue for harmful intervention, but does suggest that wild animal welfare deserves serious ethical and scientific attention proportionate to its scale.
