Enrichment for cats in boarding facilities reduces stress and boredom. Evidence-based approaches to cognitive and sensory enrichment improve welfare during the boarding stay.
Enrichment in boarding settings is too often limited to toys that cats ignore under stress. Effective enrichment must address the specific stressors of boarding: unfamiliarity, absence of usual routine, inability to control environment and proximity of unknown cats. Olfactory enrichment using familiar scents, cognitive challenge through food puzzles, and provision of multiple height options for surveilling the environment address these specific needs. Staff interaction should be offered but not forced.
