Dehorning is a painful procedure performed routinely to prevent injury in housed cattle, but genetic selection for polled (naturally hornless) cattle offers a pain-free alternative.
Dehorning causes undeniable suffering even when performed correctly with analgesia. The existence and growing availability of polled genetics makes continuation of routine dehorning increasingly difficult to justify on welfare grounds. Breeding polled animals eliminates the need for the procedure entirely.
