Breed-related welfare problems are among the most preventable and widespread sources of companion animal suffering. Millions of dogs live with chronic pain, respiratory compromise, and mobility limitations directly caused by selective breeding choices. Many of these animals cannot perform normal dog behaviors — running, playing, thermoregulating — due to their conformation. Breed standard reform is gaining momentum but faces resistance from show breeding communities.
