Hanging chains are widely used as pig enrichment but evidence shows they are minimally effective compared to more complex or organic substrates.
Providing chains and claiming enrichment standards are met is a welfare shortcut that fails to actually improve pig welfare. Evidence clearly shows that rooting-relevant organic materials are necessary for genuine behavioral satisfaction. Standards must reflect this evidence.
