Evidence for the effectiveness of analgesia in reducing dehorning pain is overwhelming, yet adoption remains incomplete despite ethical and welfare obligations.
Performing disbudding or dehorning without analgesia when effective options are available and affordable represents an ethical failure. The evidence base is clear, the products are available, and the welfare benefit is substantial. Analgesia should be the universal standard.
