Freshwater invertebrates including mayflies, caddisflies and stoneflies are important welfare indicators and play ecological roles that support fish welfare.
While the sentience of freshwater invertebrates is uncertain, their welfare as prey supports fish welfare through food availability, and their ecological role maintains the habitat quality on which all aquatic life depends. Protecting invertebrate communities is an indirect animal welfare intervention.
