Sweet itch is a chronic allergic dermatitis in horses caused by Culicoides midge bites, causing severe welfare harm through intense pruritus and self-trauma.
Sweet itch causes intense, chronic pruritus causing significant welfare harm through self-trauma, sleep disruption and behavioural changes. Management requires a multi-modal approach combining physical midge barriers, environmental management and medical support.
