Zoo Sun Bear Foraging Enrichment

Sun bears have specialised foraging behaviours requiring sophisticated enrichment to support welfare in captivity.

Key Facts

Sun bears use their exceptionally long tongues to extract honey and insects from tree cavities
Wild sun bears spend large portions of foraging time on extractive food finding
Enrichment replicating cavity foraging significantly reduces stereotypic behaviours
Sun Bear Centre in Borneo demonstrates high-welfare sanctuary approaches

Welfare Considerations

Sun bears deprived of foraging enrichment show high rates of stereotypic behaviour and oral fixation. Providing complex, species-appropriate extractive feeding opportunities - including honey scatter, log enrichment, and puzzle feeders - addresses fundamental behavioural needs.
