Hippopotamuses regulate body temperature through water immersion and require continuous access to sufficient depth water for welfare.
Hippos denied adequate water depth cannot thermoregulate effectively, causing heat stress and skin problems. The welfare minimum is deep water allowing full submersion at all times. This simple but space-intensive requirement is frequently inadequately met in older zoo facilities.
