Wild Pheasant Release Welfare Concerns

Large-scale pheasant releases for shooting raise welfare concerns at multiple stages from hatchery to harvest.

Key Facts

Over 47 million pheasants are released in the UK annually for shooting
Released pheasants suffer high mortality from predation, road traffic, and disease in first weeks
Pen systems used before release are associated with injurious pecking behaviour
Many released pheasants survive to become feral establishing impacts on local wildlife

Welfare Considerations

Pheasants experience welfare challenges throughout their production including hatchery conditions, pen housing with feather pecking, and release mortality. The welfare of individual pheasants released to face high predation mortality is a legitimate concern alongside game shooting ethics more broadly.

What You Can Do

Engage with shooting industry welfare reform efforts including higher density pen restrictions
Support discussion of pheasant welfare standards in game management policy
Consider the welfare implications of game consumption choices
