Zoo Chimpanzee Tool Use Enrichment

Providing chimpanzees with tool-use opportunities meets cognitive welfare needs reflecting their natural extractive foraging behaviour.

Key Facts

Wild chimpanzees use over 40 different tool types including nut-cracking stones and termite fishing sticks
Tool use is culturally transmitted between individuals in wild populations
Zoo chimpanzees given appropriate materials spontaneously develop and use tools
Tool-use enrichment increases positive engagement and reduces stereotypic behaviour

Welfare Considerations

Chimpanzees deprived of tool-use opportunities cannot express a fundamental dimension of their cognitive capacity. Providing appropriate materials - sticks for termite fishing, substrates for nut cracking - enables natural cognitive engagement that significantly enhances welfare. Tool-use enrichment is a welfare essential, not optional.
