Zoo Spectacled Bear Andean Welfare

Spectacled bears are the only native bear of South America, requiring forest-edge habitat enrichment for welfare in zoos.

Key Facts

Spectacled bears are primarily frugivorous and spend significant time in trees
They are vulnerable in the wild due to deforestation and hunting
Arboreal enrichment including climbing platforms and fruit scatter feeding is essential
Spectacled bears are generally solitary and require careful pair management

Welfare Considerations

Spectacled bears in barren ground-level zoo enclosures cannot express arboreal foraging and resting behaviour. Species-appropriate welfare requires climbing structures, frugivorous diet complexity, and sufficient space for natural ranging patterns. Forced social housing of incompatible individuals causes welfare compromise.
