Zoo Sun Bear Foraging Behaviour Welfare

Sun bears have highly specialised foraging behaviours that must be accommodated in captive environments for good welfare.

Key Facts

Sun bears are the world's smallest bear species, native to Southeast Asian rainforests
They have extraordinarily long tongues evolved for extracting honey and insects from crevices
Wild sun bears spend extensive time foraging - up to 60% of active time
Stereotypic behaviours including pacing are common in inadequately enriched sun bears
Good captive environments include climbing structures, digging substrate, and multiple feeding opportunities
Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Malaysia leads rehabilitation and release work

Welfare Considerations

Sun bears are often described as the least well-known bear species in captivity. Their highly specialised foraging needs require creative enrichment provision. Zoos that provide complex, variable feeding challenges show markedly lower rates of stereotypic behaviour in sun bears.

What You Can Do

Visit zoos with well-designed sun bear exhibits that prioritise foraging enrichment
Support Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and Rinjani Sun Bear programmes
Avoid purchasing products containing palm oil linked to sun bear habitat destruction
Advocate for high foraging enrichment standards in zoo sun bear care guidelines
