Companion Dog Play Behaviour and Welfare

Play is a fundamental welfare need in dogs - understanding what constitutes healthy play prevents misinterpretation and welfare harm.

Key Facts

Play serves functions including social bonding, physical exercise, and cognitive stimulation
Dog play signals including play bows, loose body posture, and role reversal indicate mutually willing play
Mismatch in play style between individual dogs can cause stress and escalation
Forced play interactions between unwilling dogs cause welfare harm
Off-lead play requires active monitoring for signs of stress or escalation
Play between dogs and humans should respect dog communication signals

Welfare Considerations

Play is not merely a leisure activity for dogs - it is a fundamental behavioural need. Dogs deprived of appropriate play opportunities show increased frustration and behaviour problems. Understanding dog play communication enables owners and carers to facilitate welfare-positive interactions and prevent negative experiences.

What You Can Do

Learn to read dog body language to identify willing versus stressed play
Monitor play between dogs and intervene if one dog is clearly not enjoying the interaction
Provide daily opportunities for off-lead play appropriate to your dog's age and fitness
Avoid rough play styles that may inadvertently reward excitable or aggressive behaviour
Consult a qualified behaviourist if your dog shows aggressive behaviour during play
