Tilapia is the third most farmed fish globally - intensive tropical production systems raise distinct welfare challenges.
Tilapia welfare in tropical production systems is under-researched compared to salmon and other high-value species. Improving slaughter welfare through CO2 or percussion stunning and reducing stocking densities are priority welfare improvements. Given global production volumes, small improvements in tilapia welfare affect enormous numbers of individual fish.
