Grouper aquaculture is economically important in Southeast Asia but raises welfare concerns around sourcing wild juveniles and slaughter practices.
Grouper aquaculture welfare involves issues across the entire production chain: from cyanide fishing for wild juveniles causing widespread reef damage and animal harm, to high-density cage rearing, to live transport and slaughter without stunning. Developing reliable hatchery production would eliminate the wild juvenile welfare concern.
