Veganism is the most direct consumer expression of animal welfare concern, but its relationship with welfare science involves both alignment and productive tension worth exploring.
Veganism and welfare science share the goal of reducing animal suffering but approach it differently. Veganism eliminates demand for animal products, removing the economic driver of factory farming. Welfare science seeks to improve conditions within systems. Neither approach alone is sufficient — welfare science without demand reduction cannot achieve transformative change; veganism without welfare advocacy leaves current animal farming unreformed during the long transition. The most effective advocacy combines reducing consumption with demanding better conditions for animals currently in systems.
