Wild Yellowhammer Farmland Welfare

Yellowhammers have declined severely across UK farmland - stubble retention and winter feeding are critical welfare interventions.

Key Facts

UK yellowhammer populations have declined by over 55% since 1970
They depend heavily on cereal stubble fields in winter for weed seeds and spilled grain
Changes to farming including autumn-sown crops and over-winter ploughing have removed key winter food resources
Agri-environment scheme options including spring sown cereals and stubble retention help
Yellowhammers are year-round residents breeding in dense hedgerows adjacent to farmland
Wales holds some of the highest remaining yellowhammer densities in the UK

Welfare Considerations

Yellowhammer welfare is fundamentally a food availability issue in winter. Without access to weedy stubble or seed-bearing crops over winter, birds cannot maintain condition through the harshest months. Farms that retain stubble through winter provide direct welfare support to yellowhammer populations.

What You Can Do

Support RSPB and Welsh government yellowhammer conservation projects
Advocate for agri-environment scheme options specifically targeting yellowhammer winter food
Buy food from farms participating in higher-tier agri-environment management
Participate in BTO farmland bird surveys to monitor yellowhammer trends
Plant dense native hedgerows as breeding habitat on farmland you manage
