Lowland tapirs are semi-aquatic animals that require access to water for thermoregulation and natural behaviour in captivity.
Lowland tapir welfare in captivity depends significantly on access to deep pools for swimming and thermoregulation. Zoos in warm climates without adequate water provision will have tapirs showing heat stress. Mud pools and misting systems can supplement but not replace deep water access for this semi-aquatic species.
