Oystercatchers nest on coastal beaches and farmland - human disturbance and predation pressure are the primary welfare challenges.
Oystercatcher nesting welfare is acutely affected by human recreational pressure on beaches. Adults flush from nests during disturbance exposing eggs to chilling and predation. Dogs off leads are a particularly significant disturbance source. Seasonal beach closure of nesting areas combined with on-beach wardening programmes significantly improve breeding success.
