Zoo Spectacled Bear Andean Welfare

Spectacled bears are South America's only bear species - their specialist dietary and habitat needs require careful management in captivity.

Key Facts

Spectacled bears are the only bear native to South America with a range across Andean cloud forests
They are largely herbivorous eating bromeliads, cacti, and fruit supplemented by insects and small animals
Captive spectacled bears require access to climbing structures as they are arboreal foragers in the wild
They are generally solitary requiring careful introductions for breeding
IUCN lists spectacled bears as Vulnerable with habitat loss and hunting as primary threats
The species holds cultural significance as the basis for Paddington Bear

Welfare Considerations

Spectacled bear welfare in captivity requires appropriate dietary variety, climbing infrastructure, and social management. Their specialist herbivorous diet requires access to appropriate plant foods not provided by standard carnivore diets. Solitary housing with controlled introductions for breeding is the appropriate management approach.
