Wild Pine Marten Impact on Red Squirrels

Pine marten recovery is suppressing grey squirrel populations in parts of Ireland and Scotland, indirectly benefiting red squirrels.

Key Facts

Research from Ireland shows pine marten recovery correlates strongly with grey squirrel decline
Grey squirrels are less able than red squirrels to detect and escape pine marten predation
Red squirrels appear to coexist with pine martens better than greys due to evolved anti-predator behaviour
This indirect trophic cascade benefit is one of the most exciting findings in UK conservation
Pine marten reintroductions to Wales are being assessed partly for their grey squirrel management potential
The welfare implications of pine marten predation on grey squirrels must be considered honestly

Welfare Considerations

Pine marten predation on grey squirrels involves individual grey squirrel welfare costs that generate population-level red squirrel welfare and conservation benefits. This is a classic compassionate conservation dilemma. The emerging evidence that a naturally recovering predator can restore the competitive balance between squirrel species offers a welfare-positive alternative to large-scale lethal grey squirrel control.
