Zoo Marine Mammal Welfare Reform Progress

Marine mammal captivity has faced significant welfare reform pressure - progress is measurable but the field remains contested.

Key Facts

Several major aquariums and marine parks have announced phase-outs of cetacean performances following public welfare concern
Orca captivity phase-out has been committed to by several major US facilities following campaigning
Standards for captive cetaceans including pool size, social grouping, and enrichment have been strengthened
Some facilities have transitioned from performance-based to education and conservation-focused models
The welfare science of captive cetaceans shows strong links between pool complexity and behaviour problems
Research into cetacean cognition continues to inform welfare debates about appropriate captivity standards

Welfare Considerations

Marine mammal welfare reform has been one of the most publicly visible animal welfare debates of the past decade. While progress is genuine, facilities vary enormously in welfare standards. The emerging consensus in the welfare science community is that large-brained social cetaceans have welfare needs that are difficult to meet in any captive environment.

What You Can Do

Choose only accredited marine facilities that have committed to education over performance models
Support World Animal Protection campaigns for marine mammal welfare standards
Donate to facilities transitioning from performance-based to welfare-focused models
Advocate for legislative minimum standards for all captive cetaceans
Avoid facilities that still require cetaceans to perform unnatural tricks for entertainment
