Zoo Amur Leopard Cat Enrichment | Animal Welfare Hub

Small wild cats in zoos are often overlooked in enrichment provision compared to large felids - their welfare needs are equally significant.

Key Facts

Small wild cats including Amur leopard cats, fishing cats, and ocelots have high activity requirements
They are often more active nocturnally creating a mismatch with daytime zoo visitor patterns
Olfactory enrichment is particularly important for felids which rely heavily on scent communication
Small wild cats benefit from vertical space, complex terrain, and variable foraging opportunities
Many small cat species are solitary requiring individual housing with managed breeding introductions
Conservation significance is often less recognised than large felids reducing advocacy for welfare investment

Welfare Considerations

Small wild cat welfare is frequently underprovided in zoo settings where large charismatic felids attract the majority of enrichment investment and keeper attention. Yet small cats have comparable complexity in behaviour, space use, and cognitive needs. Equal welfare attention regardless of charisma or public appeal is an ethical imperative in zoo management.
