Long-distance livestock transport causes significant welfare harm - shorter journeys and improved vehicle design reduce suffering.
Animal transport is an intrinsically stressful experience for farm animals. Minimising journey duration, maintaining appropriate temperature and ventilation, ensuring access to water, and using experienced loaders and drivers are the most important welfare factors. A long-term goal of reducing live transport in favour of meat and carcass trade would substantially reduce transport welfare harm.
