Wild Grey Seal Breeding Colony Welfare

Grey seal breeding colonies are expanding UK populations - colony management and disturbance control affect pup welfare.

Key Facts

UK grey seal populations have grown substantially with colonies on Orkney, the Farne Islands, and Pembrokeshire
Females give birth to single white-coated pups in autumn-winter depending on colony location
Pups are nursed for approximately 18 days then abandoned to fend for themselves
Disturbance of breeding colonies causes pup abandonment and adult stress
Dog disturbance at beach colonies is a significant welfare concern during pupping season
Grey seals face entanglement in discarded fishing gear as a significant welfare threat

Welfare Considerations

Grey seal pup welfare during the breeding season is highly sensitive to human disturbance. Females interrupted during nursing may permanently abandon pups. The rapid weight gain pups achieve during nursing is essential for survival after abandonment. Seasonal restrictions on beach access near breeding colonies directly protect pup welfare.

What You Can Do

Keep dogs on leads and at appropriate distances from seal breeding colonies in winter
Follow Natural England and wildlife organisation guidance on safe seal watching distances
Report entangled seals to BDMLR on 01825 765546 for rescue response
Support Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme and UK seal conservation monitoring
Advocate for stronger marine litter legislation to reduce seal entanglement risk
