Corncrake Wintering Ecology and Flyway Welfare

Corncrakes winter in sub-Saharan Africa and face threats across their entire migratory flyway, not just at UK breeding sites.

Key Facts

UK and Irish corncrake populations have recovered significantly with agri-environment support
West African wintering populations face hunting and habitat loss
Corncrakes migrate at night and are frequently killed by vehicles during transit
Males call persistently through night hours to attract females to breeding territories

Welfare Considerations

Hunting mortality during migration and on wintering grounds undermines welfare gains at UK breeding sites. Night-time road mortality is a poorly quantified but potentially significant source of fatalities.

What You Can Do

Support international conservation programmes that protect flyway and wintering habitats
Advocate for reduced driving speed near known migration corridors at night
Contribute to corncrake monitoring to track population trends across the range
