Dust bathing is an important thermoregulatory and social behaviour for African elephants that is frequently absent in zoo settings due to enclosure design.
Absence of dust bathing opportunities reduces natural behaviour repertoire and may contribute to skin health problems. Providing suitable dry substrate areas within enclosures is a low-cost, high-welfare intervention. Welfare audits should assess substrate diversity as standard.
