Lameness is one of the most prevalent and painful welfare conditions in dairy cattle, costing farmers economically while causing significant animal suffering.
Lame cows experience chronic, severe pain with every step. Delayed detection and treatment prolongs suffering unnecessarily. Lameness is largely preventable through housing design, foot bathing, routine trimming, and effective surveillance. Treating lameness as an accepted production cost is ethically unacceptable.
