Wild Pygmy Shrew Conservation in Ireland and Scotland

The pygmy shrew is the only native land mammal in Ireland. Its conservation status and welfare are threatened by competition from introduced greater white-toothed shrews.

Key Facts

Pygmy shrews weigh only 3-6 grams - among the world's smallest mammals
Greater white-toothed shrews introduced to Ireland are displacing pygmy shrews
Ireland's pygmy shrew population declined significantly in the 2000s
Pygmy shrews need dense ground cover and abundant invertebrates

Welfare Considerations

Competition from invasive greater white-toothed shrews creates chronic stress and food scarcity for pygmy shrews. Biosecurity to prevent further spread and habitat enhancement are key responses.

What You Can Do

Support mammal society surveys to track pygmy shrew distribution
Maintain dense ground vegetation in gardens as refuge habitat
Report sightings to wildlife trusts in Ireland and Scotland
