Wild Merlin Conservation on Upland Moorland

The merlin is Britain's smallest falcon, nesting on upland heather moorland. Its welfare depends on heather management, prey bird availability, and freedom from persecution.

Key Facts

Merlins nest on the ground in heather moorland or abandoned crow nests in trees
They are strongly associated with meadow pipits as prey during the breeding season
Merlin populations are stable but highly localised in upland Wales, Scotland and northern England
Illegal persecution on grouse moors affects some merlin populations

Welfare Considerations

Merlin welfare requires heather moorland maintained at appropriate structure through rotational burning or cutting, with minimal disturbance near nesting areas. Persecution must be actively investigated and prosecuted.
