The little owl was introduced to Britain in the 19th century and has become naturalised. Populations have declined significantly, primarily due to loss of rough grassland and old orchard habitats.
Little owl welfare depends on traditional orchard and rough grassland habitats. Modern orchard management removing old trees, and grassland intensification, are the primary welfare threats. Nest boxes in suitable habitats can compensate partially.
