Long-eared owls are secretive woodland owls whose welfare depends on mixed forest habitats and old crow nests. They are easily overlooked, making welfare monitoring challenging.
Long-eared owl welfare requires woodland edges adjacent to open hunting ground, and tolerance of nest-building corvids that provide nest sites. Persecution of crows and magpies in adjacent areas can reduce long-eared owl nesting opportunities.
