Corncrakes are critically declining in Scotland and Ireland. Their welfare recovery depends on agri-environment schemes that delay cutting of hay meadows until after chick fledging.
Corncrake welfare requires hay and silage cutting to be delayed until at least 1 August, and for cutting patterns to allow birds to escape rather than concentrating them in front of machinery. Agri-environment payments compensate farmers for this welfare management.
