Zoo Colobus Monkey Social Group Welfare

Black-and-white colobus monkeys live in complex social groups with strict hierarchy. Zoo management of group composition directly affects welfare through competition and social access.

Key Facts

Colobus monkeys have specialised multi-chambered stomachs for fermenting leaves
Social groups in the wild include one male with multiple females and young
Leaf-eating adaptations require fresh browse provision as essential enrichment
Infanticide risk from new males is a welfare consideration during group management

Welfare Considerations

Colobus welfare depends on stable social groups with appropriate sex ratios and age structures. Providing browse - fresh leafy branches - satisfies feeding behaviour and gut function. Group introductions require careful behavioural monitoring.
