Gilt-head seabream and European seabass are major Mediterranean aquaculture species. Their welfare in sea cage and land-based systems reflects both environmental and management factors.
Seabream and seabass welfare at slaughter is particularly poor in Mediterranean systems where ice slurry without stunning remains common. Percussion stunning or electrical stunning before chilling dramatically reduces welfare harm and should be required by certification standards.
