Pygmy hippos are critically endangered with fewer than 2,500 wild individuals. Their welfare depends on West African forest streams and rivers under severe hunting and habitat pressure.
Pygmy hippo welfare monitoring relies on camera traps and community informant networks given their solitary nocturnal habits. Supporting forest and river habitat protection in Liberia is the most direct welfare intervention accessible to international supporters.
