Scientific evidence for invertebrate sentience is growing rapidly. Bees, crabs, octopuses and other invertebrates show pain responses, learning and stress behaviours that demand welfare consideration.
Expanding the moral circle to invertebrates requires incorporating precautionary welfare thinking for species where sentience evidence is emerging but incomplete. The scale of invertebrate use in food production means even small probability of sentience multiplied by vast numbers creates significant welfare concern.
