Dust bathing is a high-priority behavioural need for laying hens. Substrate type and provision frequency significantly affect welfare, with sand and friable material preferred.
Laying hen dust bathing welfare requires providing adequate quantities of appropriate substrate - peat, sand or wood shavings - at a frequency that allows normal daily bathing cycles. Static enrichment pads that become soiled and unusable fail to meet this welfare need.
