Commercial turkeys are bred for such extreme growth rates that they cannot mate naturally, often cannot walk comfortably, and face severe welfare challenges throughout their lives.
The selective pressure for rapid growth in commercial turkeys has created animals whose bodies are fundamentally incompatible with normal movement and reproduction. Leg disorders cause chronic pain. Breast muscle growth so heavy that birds struggle to walk is normalized in the industry. Turkeys are curious and socially complex animals capable of suffering far beyond what their commercial production acknowledges.
