House martins build mud nests on building eaves and are declining due to loss of nest sites, mud availability and insect food shortages.
Each nest represents weeks of nest-building effort by the pair. Destruction of active nests causes direct breeding failure and welfare harm. Persistence of house martins in areas despite suitable nest sites suggests prey insect shortage may also limit populations.
