Geladas are grass-eating primates from Ethiopian highlands whose welfare in zoos requires large grassland areas and complex one-male unit social structure.
Providing sufficient grass for geladas to exhibit natural feeding behaviour requires unusually large outdoor enclosures. One-male unit social structure must be respected in captive group composition. Geladas in inappropriate enclosures cannot express key species-specific behaviours.
