Slaughter method is a critical welfare point in trout farming, with significant variation in practice from rapid stunning to prolonged ice slaughter.
Ice slaughter results in slow loss of consciousness during which fish are likely to experience stress and pain. Percussive stunning when applied correctly is currently the best available rapid method for small-scale operations. Scaling up humane slaughter to all trout farms is a welfare priority.
