Dormice are UK's only truly hibernating rodents and require connected woodland habitats, with populations at risk from fragmentation and woodland management changes.
Fragmented woodland isolates populations so that individuals cannot disperse to find mates or food. Starvation during early emergence from hibernation if mild weather depletes fat reserves prematurely is a welfare concern. Woodland management that creates hazel coppice directly benefits dormouse welfare.
