Dust bathing is a strong motivational behaviour in chickens and turkeys that is frustrated when birds are kept without appropriate substrate, causing welfare deficits.
Frustration of dust bathing motivation is a welfare harm even in the absence of physical injury. Vacuum dust bathing on wire floors is an abnormal behaviour indicating unmet needs. Providing appropriate substrate addresses a fundamental welfare need at relatively low cost.
