Common dolphins are frequently caught as bycatch in pair trawls and gill nets in UK and European Atlantic waters, with hundreds dying annually.
Drowning in nets causes death through oxygen deprivation - a prolonged and stressful cause of death. Dolphins showing avoidance of bycatch may still become entangled when pursuing fish shoals through nets. Mandatory pinger use and area closures during sensitive periods could significantly reduce this welfare harm.
