Rooting is a fundamental behaviour in pigs, and its frustration in barren housing environments is a major welfare concern linked to stereotypies and redirected behaviours.
Frustration of rooting motivation is one of the clearest welfare failures in intensive pig production. Pigs in barren environments redirect rooting onto pen-mates causing tail biting and aggression. Provision of adequate manipulable material is cost-effective and welfare-significant.
